Voor de aanleg van de tunnel bestonden er twee overzetboten : de Sint-Annekensboot bij het Steen en de treinboot Land van Waas / Pays de Waes tussen de twee spoorwegstations : Vlaams Hoofd of later Antwerpen-West op de Linkeroever en Antwerpen-Waas aan de Sint-Michielskaai. Er worden nog veel authentieke onderdelen van de tunnel bewaard waaronder: de houten roltrappen, oude waarschuwingsborden, de twee inkomhallen .
