Versailles is a French commune, located in the department of Yvelines and the region Île-de-France. Artificial city created from scratch by the will of King Louis XIV, it was the seat of French political power for a century, from 1682 to 1789 before becoming the cradle of the French Revolution. After losing its status as a royal city, it became the capital of a department of the Seine-et-Oise in 1790 and that of Yvelines in 1968, and a bishopric. In the twenty-first century is a city residential and tertiary sectors of the Parisian suburbs, known especially for its castle, its gardens, national museum, monument in the world heritage list of Unesco and tourist destination map.
